After reading several Hollywood Vampires stories, some of you may have noticed that many of the tales make reference to events in other stories, and that some even continue themes explored in other adventures, even if they aren't specifically part of a specific set of tales, such as "The Raven Effect" or the "Pathway To Darkness" series . . . that's because I'm very much enamored with having an ongoing universe, where many stories are part of a bigger whole or picture, even though they can be enjoyed separately on their own. When I first began reading H.P. Lovecraft's work, I was always delighted to find references to other stories I'd read in many of the tales, and I found that attention to detail and "connectedness" to be a very compelling and fascinating part of Lovecraft's writing . . . so naturally I'm trying to attempt the same thing with my own stories! It was pretty easy at first, when I only had three or four stories to keep track of, but with a novel and well over a dozen short stories (and a novella), plus with many more on the way, it occurred to me that I'd probably better do something to help myself keep track of what events occurred when, so that I don't run into a big incomprehensible tangle of contradicting happenings. Continuity can be great fun when applied properly, but it can become a real bitch whenever it gets out of control and gets the fast and loose treatment . . . go ask a fan of DC comics about how screwed-up Hawkman's continuity's been for years now, or how DC's continuity got so messy that not just one, but two entire miniseries (Crisis On Infinite Earths and Zero Hour) had to be created in order to iron things out. I'm trying very hard to make sure that the Hollywood Vampires continuity doesn't get screwed up that horrendously, and one of the ways I'm doing so is by putting together what you'll find below . . . a timeline!
The timeline contains a listing of all of the stories found on the site at the moment and places them all in their proper chronological context, to make it easy for a reader such as yourself (or me when I need to reference-check) to see when particular stories unfold in the Hollywood Vampires universe, and for convenience's sake, you can even click on the story titles and be taken right to them. I'm also looking to add in extra events that don't occur in any particular story, such as Stephen meeting Donita for the first time, in order to help further flesh out the big picture of happenings, and I'll toss those in as I think of them, just like I'll add new stories to the timeline as they appear, thus hopefully keeping everything neatly in order. Now, if all goes well, this should make it easy to keep track of things going on with the Vampires, at least in a chronological sense!
NOTE: I consider Unholy War to be the center of the Vampires' universe, as it was the first canonical Vampires tale I wrote, and I tend to view happenings with the Vampires to either be pre-Unholy War or post-Unholy War, which is why you'll notice an abundance of tales taking place after the novel, with pre-novel tales trickling in every now and again. That's also why the novel and the stories after it take place in 1997, with Unholy War occurring in the spring of '97 . . . that's when I wrote the first draft of the novel, and I tend to look at that time period as the starting point for the Vampires' continuity. But while I'm going to enforce certain continuity elements tightly, such as the goings-on with the Vampires, I'm going to play a bit loosely with "real-world" happenings in places, so if somebody makes reference to a band or movie that didn't exist in 1997, don't worry about it . . . just get it into your head that while the world the Hollywood Vampires occupy is a great deal like ours, almost exactly so, there's going to be little minor differences here and there. Don't sweat it, and just sit back and enjoy the stories. But if you do happen to notice a glaring continuity glitch dealing with the Vampires themselves or contradictory happenings in some of the stories, feel free to let me know, and I'll be happy to give you credit for your eagle-eyes!
